Black Onyx ‘Buttercream’ Frosting - Dairy Free
Decadent dark chocolate frosting made from black onyx cocoa powder and Dutch process cocoa powder takes cake and cupcakes to a new level.
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) vegan margarine
  • 3/4 cup Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup black onyx cocoa powder
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup almond or other nondairy milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder
Instructions
1. Bring margarine to room temperature and soften. In a medium bowl, whisk together by hand the two cocoa powders. Cream together with the margarine. 2. Add the powdered sugar and mix well. 3. Stir in 1/3 cup milk and vanilla. Stir in the espresso powder. Add more milk to reach a spreadable consistency. 4. Makes enough to frost 2 dozen cupcakes or a 9-inch, 2-layer cake. Make ahead, cover and refrigerate until ready to spread – add a little more milk if the icing has dried out.
